Description
Spectator travel is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions associated with sports events. All types of sports events have the opportunity to reduce their environmental impacts and improve active travel opportunities through innovative approaches to change fan travel behaviour.
Sports organisations have a lot to gain from encouraging active travel to their venues and events, including a healthier fan-base, a more active workforce which takes less sick leave, through to less pressure on car parking spaces, improved air quality around their event and an enhanced relationship with communities. Promoting active mobility to sports events therefore provides a combination of health, environmental and logistical benefits whilst also helping to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
In this panel discussion, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) will be joined by Karine Bozzacchi, CSR (corporate social responsibility) manager for cycling at ASO who will share knowledge about the Tour De France’s efforts to promote mobility by bicycle through the “Riding into the Future” programme. The panel will also feature contributions from the European Healthy Stadia Network (Healthy Stadia), which has developed Active Travel Guidance to support European colleagues in stadium operations, events, transport and sustainability roles with the knowledge and tools to increase provision for walking and cycling to sports venues.
