Powering E-bus fleets: Cities Discover Solutions to Transport Electrification

Mar 23, 2023 | 2:30 PM CET - 3:20 PM CET

Main Stage

Description

Electric mobility presents a remarkable opportunity to decarbonize the transport sector, accounting for around a quarter of total carbon emissions worldwide. The conversation needs to shift from electrifying cars to public transport to unleash such potential. Expanding the e-bus adoption within public transportation systems is one of the most impactful and cost-effective alternatives to reduce carbon emissions and air pollutants and expand transport access in urban areas. Some first-mover cities are leading the way in e-buses adoption, mainly in China. However, there is still a long way to go for e-buses to become mainstream in transport systems worldwide. High-upfront costs and a lack of enabling regulatory framework and financial incentives are among the main bottlenecks limiting further adoption. Therefore, actors from the public and private sectors need to align efforts and develop innovative solutions to accelerate the transition to e-buses for achieving low-carbon urban transport systems. By bringing together city representatives across the globe, and transport policymakers and experts, this session will showcase concrete, innovative and replicable solutions to overcome access barriers to e-buses. From mass procurement policies in India to the full-electrification actionable plans in Latin America, south-south learning experiences can lead most of the world in the electric transition. Furthermore, the session will highlight which other vital aspects need improvement to ensure reliable, comfortable, safe, and efficient public transport systems.
